Scar Revision
Scars from accidents, surgery, burns, mole removal, and other causes
require different treatment approaches based on their origin, location, depth, and skin condition.
At SNU Plastic Surgery Clinic, we consider scar shape, direction, skin thickness, and skin texture
to provide customized diagnosis, precise surgery, and thorough post-operative care in a systematic manner.
Stages of Scar Formation
  • 1. Hemostasis Phase
    Wound occurs with bleeding and
    initial inflammatory response
  • 2. Inflammatory Phase
    Swelling and discharge occur
    with inflammatory reaction
  • 3. Proliferative Phase
Redness appears as new blood vessels
    and tissue are formed
  • 4. Remodeling Phase
    Tissue hardens and
    transforms into scar formation
Scar revision surgery typically begins after the remodeling phase when scar tissue has stabilized.
Usually possible 1-2 months after scar formation, depending on the condition.
Candidates for Scar Revision
  • CASE 01
    Wide and raised scars with
    irregularities or depressions
  • CASE 02
    Unnatural scars that are noticeable
due to misalignment with skin lines
  • CASE 03
    Scars causing contracture
    and limiting movement
  • CASE 04
    Scars with severe pigmentation
    that are cosmetically prominent
Surgical Procedure
  • Simple Excision & Re-suturing
Irregular or wide scars are removed,
and the direction and tension are adjusted
with fine suturing for new closure.
  • Z-plasty
    Z-shaped incision changes the direction
of the scar and is applied to scars
    requiring contracture or tension relief.
  • W-plasty
The scar is incised in a W-shape to
soften the borders and blend naturally
    with the skin's wrinkle lines.
  • Skin Graft / Flap Surgery
After removing wide or deep scars, skin or
    flaps are transplanted for restoration.
Essential when functional recovery is needed.
